Scanat

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-07-04

This app (Scanat, the "Service") lets you photograph the ingredient labels of products (foods, supplements, cosmetics, household goods, etc.) or your meals, and check an AI-based evaluation, a nutrition estimate, and eating tips on your device. The Service values your privacy and keeps the information it handles to the necessary minimum.

Information we collect

The Service requires no account and does not collect personal information such as your name, email address, phone number, or address, nor any identifier used to track you.

Handling of and consent for health-related information

Within the Profile, allergies and body or conditions (pregnancy or nursing, high blood pressure, blood sugar, recent condition, etc.) constitute "special care-required personal information" under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI). The Service collects them only after showing you the purpose of use, the recipient, the cross-border transfer, and that they are optional, and only with your explicit consent. Consent is optional and can be deleted (withdrawn) at any time from "Clear all" in the Profile.

Sending images and profile, and AI evaluation

When you run a scan, the captured or selected image and (if you have consented) your profile are sent — in order to produce the evaluation — through a server we operate to the Google Gemini API (gemini-2.5-flash, operated by Google in the USA) provided by Google. When creating the "how to eat tomorrow" tips, no image is sent; instead a summary of the last few days of meals recorded on your device (dish names and nutrition estimates) and (if consented) your profile and the trend of your past reactions are sent as text, through the same server, to Gemini. The purpose is limited to creating and showing you objective evaluations and suggestions based on product or meal information. The Service does not use this information for advertising or to identify or track you as an individual.

Third-party provision and cross-border transfer

Only for the purpose of creating evaluations, the Service sends images and (if consented) your profile to Google (Google Gemini API). Processing takes place at Google in the USA, subject to that company's security and protection measures under its privacy policy and API terms. Third-party provision and cross-border transfer that include special care-required personal information are carried out based on your consent. Apart from the above, the Service does not provide your information to third parties (except where legally required, such as a lawful disclosure request).

Handling on our server

Our server temporarily processes images and profile to create evaluations, but does not store them persistently on the server side. It is not designed to accumulate your information or keep it as a database.

Usage measurement

To improve the Service and understand feature usage, the Service may send anonymous events indicating that an action occurred (for example, a scan completed, tips created, a reaction to tips, or reaching the free daily limit) and the date-time to a server we operate.

Events also carry an install identifier — a random value generated inside the app, together with the date of first launch. It is used only to tell whether the same installation keeps using the Service, and it is not a device identifier such as an advertising ID (IDFA) or a hardware ID. Running “Clear everything” in the app deletes it, and a different value is generated on the next launch.

These events include no information that identifies you as an individual — such as name, email address, advertising identifier, hardware device ID, IP address, captured image, evaluation content, meal content, or profile. They are not used for advertising or to track you individually.

Advertising

To keep the Service free, we may show rewarded (opt-in video) ads, delivered through Google AdMob.

On-device storage and how to delete

Evaluations, captured images, meal records, reactions to tips, and your profile are stored only on your device and are not automatically sent or synced externally.

Children and age

The Service is not intended to be used by children on their own. If a child uses it, please do so under the supervision of a guardian. For the Profile (which includes age and health-related information), those under 18 should enter information with the consent of a guardian (legal representative), and those under 16 should refrain from entering information. The Service does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Nature of the evaluation results

The scores and evaluation results shown by the Service are offered as a guide to the clarity of a product's label information and how easy it is to choose. They do not guarantee or assert any health effect, treatment, prevention, or effect on the body. For decisions about using a product or about your health, please also check the product label, information from public authorities, and advice from professionals.

Changes to this privacy policy

The Service may revise this policy in response to added features or changes in law. If there is a material change, we will notify you within the Service or on the app's distribution page.
